The Latin American Cancer Research Coalition (LACRC) was formed in 2000 in response to the Special Population Network on Cancer Awareness and Research Initiative, funded by the National Cancer Institute. The LACRC is one of 18 networks that are funded through the NCI initiative with the aim of working towards increasing cancer awareness and eliminating health disparities among minorities. The first of its kind in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, the objective of this 5-year nationwide initiative is to build relationships between large research institutions and community based programs and to find ways of addressing important questions about the burden of cancer in minority communities.
